MY CRANE  FAMILY

(see below for other branches and more detail)

By Linda Schreiber

Starting with my great grandfather John Crane and great grandmother Abigail Burch:

John Crane (1) b. February 24, 1806, Maryland. d. 1888, Nebraska. Married Abigail Burch b. May 16, 1814, North Carolina, d. 1894, NC. ( I have a family history note that John Crane’s family came from Wales to England to So Carolina). Their son, John Nathaniel Crane, b. July 2, 1847 in Stanford, Indiana d. 1933 in CA. Married Susan Fultz b. March 28, 1848 in Wellsville, Ohio. Died 1935 in CA.

FULTZ

Parents of Susan Fultz:

Daniel Fultz b. 1828 in Ohio, d. 1908 Neb. married Elizabeth Todd. b. 1825 and d. 1901 in San Dimas, CA.

FAMILY STORY

John (ii) and Susan raised 12 children; Wes, Molly, Luther, Gus, Bertha, Nanny, Roy (Daniel Leroy), Lillian, Earl, Sadie, Evelyn and Leslie. Back then lots of babies died young. The ones that made it were real healthy. Grandpa Roy had 13 and 5 died. So they raised 8. David and Marcia (Munson) are the last 2 children still living. David Crane is an architect in Sacramento, CA.

Mom said her grandfather John Crane was very strict and used his cane to discipline with. Susan ran a boarding house in CA, probably because of whatever caused John to walk with a cane. Perhaps an old war wound?  Susan was of Pennsylvania Dutch and German blood. She used to make 12 quilts a year; crazy quilts for the boys and regular for the girls. She could not read. She worked in a Penn. Cigar factory, smoked a cigar and drank wine in the cellar. Her brother died at age 14 in Andersonville VA. He was a soldier in the Union Army and was captured by the South, held prisoner, got sick and died there.

Grandpa Roy was a Methodist and played the guitar and sang and could speak Spanish. Grandma met him when she was in high school in Perris, CA. Her dad was the Postmaster there. Grandmother Ruby became a Unitarian in her later years.

 Mom’s notes (Marjorie):

The big old Crane house was in Elsinore CA.

Molly – Perris CA (lived to 100) postmistress.

Wes – Modesto

Lillian – Florida

Luther – Costa Mesa

Nanny – Costa Mesa

Bertha – Cottonwood (youngest), m. Womack

Gus – Bakersfield to Santa Maria – Big game hunter, horses, orange orchards

Roy (Daniel Leroy) Crane, was born in Stanford, Monroe Co. Indiana June 7, 1884.

Story continued…..

“Roy was happy kind of guy and loved to play the guitar and sing. Ruby played the piano and accordion. They were a complete band when Roy added the harmonica and his foot pedal drum to the ensemble. Ruby and Grandpa Crane, Roy, got married August 20, 1908, just two days after Ruby’s 20th birthday. Roy was 24 and a farmer too. They were on a ranch in Corona when their first child Lillian was born. From there they went to ranch in Imperial. Next about four miles south of Mexicali, across the border in Old Mexico, Roy and his brother Luther took their families to raise cattle. They were in Mexico for about four years until Poncho Villa made life too dangerous to stay.”

Marjorie writes, "Ruby would go to town in a buckboard for supplies and with a revolver. The children were left at the ranch with the Chinese cook. The contraband food came across the border in the false bottoms of the buckboard.”

Times were primitive there. It was nothing to see the rurales, (soldiers) lasso a Chinaman and drag him behind the horse until the poor man was dead. The Chinese would come into Mexico and try to get smuggled into the US. Many died in the attempt. They were robbed and thrown out of conveyances as one would discard a dead dog.”

REYNOLDS

My great Grandma, Ruby’s mother, Imogene died August 22, 1916 in Santa Ana, Orange County Ca. Great Grandpa Arzenio outlasted Imogene by 21 more years dying in East Los Angeles June 21, 1937.

CRANE

Ruby and Roy ended up with 8 children. One daughter of the 4 was my mom, Marjorie Evelyn Crane. Grandpa Roy passed on December 10, 1960 in Huntington Beach and Ruby, true to the long life in her family was 92 when she died, in Chula Vista. San Diego Co., CA November 7, 1980. She was quite a gal!

One of the great joys of getting to know your Grandparents is getting a sense of your heritage. Now days we are all so far apart, there is little chance to visit and pass along these stories. So it is a goal of mine, and evidently it was of Marjorie’s also, to pass along whatever we could glean about our family. I found Mom’s stories in amongst all her paperwork and photographs. We have a wonderful family and perhaps this web site will help all of you to appreciate it even more.

If you have any suggestions, additions, corrections, or deletions, please let me know. This is a family treasure we can keep alive and it will definitely grow. I guess by now we have done our fair share of populating the great state of California!

Butler; and James Crane and Christina Crane, his wife., transferred real estate in Monroe County on May 16, 1849. He died Oct. 12, 1854 leaving no widow surviving and left three sons and two daughters; Nathaniel, Daniel} and John Crane, Susan Morris, wife of John Morris, and Elisa Cole, wife of John Cole.

From another source of family history we learn that James Crane was a native of Maryland, a famous preacher and ship-builder. The record further recites that he bought a small farm during his residence in Monroe County and erected a mill there; later he moved to Beech Creek township where he bought another farm and erected a

Notes for RUBY REYNOLDS:

Ruby was the golden haired songbird, and played the organ, sang when she was not riding. Her hair was so golden that a $20.00 gold piece could be hidden in her hair, and frequently was. Unfortunately at that time women were not given a college education. Ruby finished high school and that was considered enough. But she continued to read and educate herself. I was just visiting your website on Crane Family History.  I have been working on a Crane Family history and have traced my family back to a James Crane who was born in Maryland but moved to Stanford IN and had five children with a Nancy Butler/Crane.  The five children were Nathaniel, Daniel, Susan, Eliza & John.  I am a descendant of Nathaniel Crane but have little information about the other children.  I do have that Susan Crane was born on July 16,1848 and died October 29, 1911, was married to John Morris and is buried in the Greene County Chapel Cemetery just west of Stanford, IN.

I  had a 1st cousin 4 times removed named John N. Crane that was born 7/2/1847 and died 11/27/1933.  His father was John Crane who was married to Abigail Burch.  John's father was James Crane whose father was Sampson Crane whose father was another John Crane born in Calvert MD in 1710.   I have nothing further on John N. Crane but it sounds like he married Susan Fultz.   I would be happy to add any info you have on John N. Crane and his descendants and email you what I have on the Crane family.  Right now I have information on approximately 140 Crane relatives going back to 1710.  Ironically I too am a "John Crane"  (John Kenton Crane) but go by the name of Kent.
