Many religions and scientists try to answer this and what results for most of us is a lot of items that disagree with each other. This causes us to ignore or embrace one version over another.
Certainly the people that belief people are basically lazy and no good, treat others differently than people that believe everyone is a God in training, and have the possibilities of creating anything they want in the world.
